Keiskamma Carnival exhibition
Based on Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals, the Keiskamma Carnival re-interprets this well-known orchestral work through a new arrangement by South African composer Allan Stephenson. This arrangement, which draws on the Keiskamma Music Academy’s unique crossover sound created by traditional African and Western classical instruments, has been commissioned specifically for Keiskamma Carnival with funding support from SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organisation).
Drawing on their expertise in re-imagining Western artwork
through the lens of the Eastern Cape, the Keiskamma Art Project is creating
sets and props for Keiskamma Carnival.
Following the ideas of Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival
of the Animals, the Art Project has created visual artefacts which reflect
the flora and fauna of our own surroundings, matching the birds, fish,
elephants, lions and other animals described by the music. These artefacts will
use a variety of mediums, reflecting the skills of artists at the Keiskamma Art
Project to best depict the Carnival of
the Animals.
Alongside the interdisciplinary stage production of
Keiskamma Carnival, the Keiskamma Art Project created a vibrant exhibition of
3D animals and wall sculptures inspired by the masks and props of the show.

The performances are made possible through generous funding from the Rupert Foundation.
The exhibition is funded by Mercedes-Benz South Africa, RMB and BASA.
