Leanne is a
medical doctor with a Masters degree in Public Health. She aims to address
systematic health inequalities and improve access to health care in rural areas
of South Africa. She has a background in community development and HIV/AIDS
education/counselling/project design. Prior to joining the Keiskamma Trust
team, she volunteered for the Centre for the study of AIDS (Pretoria) from
2001-2007 as an AIDS educator, and AIDS counsellor. She was also a project
manager for school based HIV/AIDS South Africa Student Volunteer Organisation
(SASVO) where she worked with a team of community health workers and
established an education project in Venda. She is a South African doctor who
trained at Pretoria University and completed her medical internship in the
Eastern Cape at Frere and Cecilia Makiwane Hospital. Her main interests are in
the field of community health and she has a specific interest in eye care. She
has worked in the field of community health in a number of low resource
settings including South Africa, Swaziland, Malawi and India.
Leanne joined
the Keiskamma Trust as a public health doctor in June 2012. Her position is
health program adviser and CIDA co-coordinator. Her role will include
monitoring and evaluation of the CIDA program, advising the strategic direction
of the health program, liaising with government and other stakeholders, and
training and supporting the CHWs.
Leanne has
already become a vibrant member of the Hamburg community. She’s a very busy
lively person and in addition to her job she’s building a rondavel for herself!
She’s a keen cyclist and has signed up for the fundraising marathon bike ride,
‘Dust for Development Treble Tour’ this autumn. Leanne sums it all up before
she speeds off to her next assignment, ‘It’s great to be joining the Keiskamma
team!’
